What is a Flu Shot?
The flu shot is a vaccine that protects you and your family from the spread of influenza. It is recommended to get your flu shot every year as influenza rapidly changes and new vaccines are developed.
What is The Flu?
The flu is a respiratory illness caused by the contagious influenza virus. It is spread mainly by droplets that are made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. When the droplets land on the mouth, nose, or eyes of the person, that virus can be inhaled into the lungs.
Symptoms of the Flu?
The flu can cause mild to severe illness, and sometimes can lead to death. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
- Fever/ Chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Muscle aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Some people will experience vomiting and diarrhea
How Can You Help Prevent TheSpread of The Flu?
Getting immunized has been proven to be the best way to prevent from getting the flu and to minimize spreading it to other humans. Many good habits are recommended that you can do to help prevent the spread of the flu like:
- Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick
- Stay at home if you are sick
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
- Constantly clean your hands
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
- Practice other good health habits, like disinfecting surfaces, plenty of sleep, be physically active etc.
Who Can Get theFlu Shot?
The flu vaccine is offered free of charge to all Albertans six months of age and older. All individuals must live, work or go to school in Alberta, and must show their Alberta Health Care card. Calgary Pharmacists can vaccinate children 5 years and older.
